She Was One Of The Biggest Stars Of The 90S, And Now She’s Struggling To Survive

Shannen Doherty

Shannen Doherty once had a thriving TV and movie career, but her health struggles in August of 2015 took center stage over everything else in her life. At the time, she revealed: “Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment. I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me.”

Shannen was very open about her battle, telling fans about the two rounds of chemotherapy required and the subsequent hair loss she suffered. She explained: “After my second treatment, my hair was really matted, like in dreadlocks. And I went to try and brush it out, and it just fell out. I just remember holding onto huge clumps of my hair in my hands and just running to my mom crying, like, ‘My hair, my hair, my hair, my hair.’”

She continued to explain that she eventually shaved her head, writing: “We did stages. We did a pixie. And then we did a mohawk, which was my favorite look. And then finally we had to get the shaver thing and just buzz it off.”

Shannen had an amazing outpouring of fan support as well as the support of her 90210 family, including Jennie Garth, who shared this beautiful message on Instagram:

“to my soul sister @theshando strongest lady i’ve ever known. then and now. i used to be threatened by your spirit, now i’m in awe of it. you’ve taught me a lot about speaking my mind and not being afraid of my power. i’m so grateful that young me got to be friends with you. but especially ‘old’ me! the best is yet to come on this crazy journey!! love you! #fightlikeagirl #fightlikebrenda #aries.”

In 2017, Shannen updated her fans about being in remission, explaining:

“Moments. They happen. Today was and is a moment. What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES. Now more waiting. As every single one of my fellow cancer family knows, the next five years is crucial. Reoccurrences happen all the time. Many of you have shared that very story with me. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait. In the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries. Decision on taking a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects. I am blessed, I know that. But for now…. remission. I’m going to just breathe. #cancerslayer.”

Shannen got back to work, filming a new TV show based on the 1988 movie Heathers. She wrote on her Instagram earlier this year:

“It wasn’t that long ago that I wondered if I would ever get to go back to doing what I love…This past week I worked 7 days. No weekend off and I loved every second. Yes I worked hard to get here but I’m also very blessed. Lucky, fortunate and not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for this blessing of a life I have…There is beauty in everything.”

Earlier this week, Shannen posted a video on Instagram and gave an update about her recent tumor marker test results. She wrote:

“Test and results. One Tumor marker test came back good. Other… elevated. Just means I get monitored and another test. But even after that call, I’m staying positive and taking stock of my life. It certainly helps put things in perspective and reminds you of what you learned thru the cancer journey. And I sometimes, need a refresher. As I’ve said before, cancer changes your life in ways no one could ever imagine…..btw, the elevation can be from all sorts of things. Oh and vitamin D… need more of that too. #stillacancerslayer.”

May you be healthy and happy!
