-Late 1944, Professor Ancel Keys of the University of Minnesota, selected 36 physically and mentally healthy people from 400 people to carry out a six-month starvation experiment. After three months of starvation, the researchers found that these people's heart rate dropped significantly, blood vessels contracted, even the heart shrunk. In addition, starvation strangely improved people's hearing, especially the sensitivity to low-frequency sounds.
-Hunger can have not only physical but also psychological effects. Most of the participants fell into depression. And developed some strange food addictions, such as collecting cookbooks, watching others eat, etc.. After the experiment, many people suffered from bulimia, and some even ate five servings of food a day. Many people struggled with abnormal eating habits for the next 5 years.
-The results of the study were eventually brought together in two books. This is by far the most detailed case in the history of famine research. And it is unlikely that this study can be replicated now, either in terms of scale or ethics.
