1. Tiger

Intensive poaching and development in their natural habitat have caused the tiger population to diminish. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, tigers are one of the most vulnerable endangered species with approximately 3,890 remaining in the wild. Dreamstime/TNS

2. Marine iguana

One of the many wonders of the Galapagos islands, marine iguanas are the only lizards in the world to forage in the sea. They have been threatened by numerous factors which include humans introducing cats, dogs, and other animals that prey on them as well as climate change effects such as sea level and air temperature rise. 3. Red panda

Slightly bigger than a domesticated cat, red pandas are increasingly poached for their unique pelts. With temperatures on the rise, red pandas move to higher elevations to survive climate change, which can place them outside of designated protected areas. 4. Polar bear

These marine mammals are facing a population decline that is directly linked to the effects of the human-caused climate change and offshore petroleum installations and operations in the Arctic. With sea ice decreasing in size and melting for longer periods of time, polar bears are forced to spend more time on land which affects their ability to hunt and breed. Dreamstime/TNS

5. Orangutan

The high demand for orangutan pets is one of the biggest threats to their decreasing population, followed by their hunting for meat. Female orangutans only give birth once every 3-5 years, making it a species slow to recover from population declines. Dreamstime/TNS

7. Elephants

The poaching of elephants is the most serious threat to these large mammals. Though many actions have been taken to end the illegal ivory trade, some still continue. Getty Images/TNS

8. Chimpanzee

Despite sharing about 98 percent of our genes with chimpanzees, human activity continues to drive this species towards extinction. The poaching of chimpanzees is an old practice in Central and West Africa for the consumption of bushmeat. Infant chimpanzees are also sold as pets. Marc Guitard/Getty Images/TNS

9. Sea lion

Another wonder of the Galapagos, sea lions are being impacted by climate change due to the decrease in fish abundance. Other threats include trash in the ocean and their killing by fishermen. Getty Images/TNS

10. Blue whale

Description: The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet and the threats it faces are similar to those faced by other ocean species. Aside from climate change leading to a fall in the population of krill, a blue whale's favorite food, they are also in danger of becoming entangled in fishing gear or hit by a ship.
