Eating was impossible, breathing was difficult, her skin was clammy and even having a wee was painful.

She’d lost loads of weight, was suffering from anxiety and had many sleepless nights fretting about her body.

Then, when she did manage to get out for the evening, friends were so shocked by her appearance they feared she’d had radical surgery.

But for Kim Kardashian the eight months of suffering were all worth it when she arrived at New York’s Met Ball to a barrage of firing camera shutters.

Because her startling “naked” dress and flawless body made headlines round the globe and further boosted her profile – on the night when A-list stars compete in a self-indulgent orgy of celebrity excess.

In a bizarre twist on the Emperor’s New Clothes fairy tale, KK, 38, commissioned a designer to make her a dress that wasn’t there.

The nude latex frock, costing tens of thousands of dollars, was dripping with crystal droplets so she’d resemble a goddess stepping out of the ocean in her birthday suit.

Wet hair and skin spray completed the look.

But three burly blokes laced her corset so tight that people thought she’d had a rib removed.

She couldn’t sit down for dinner and told fans how the diet, fitness and beauty regime required had caused her anxiety.

What a load of old balls.

Some 550 celebs, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Harry Styles, paid £27,000 a head to look ridiculous at the lavish fancy dress bash.

They were, ostensibly, raising money for a good cause – the fashion department of the Museum of Art.

But KK’s grotesque outfit and “suffering for my art” guff made me nauseous.

Because this week I watched a group of celebrity women who’ve known real suffering get genuinely naked for a truly good cause.

The stars of ITV’s The All New Full Monty – getting their kit off on stage and for TV viewers to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Like tennis legend, Martina Navratilova, 62, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and says it felt like her body was betraying her.

Like Loose Woman Coleen Nolan, 54, whose sister, Bernie, died from the disease which also affects two other siblings.

And TV presenter Victoria Derbyshire, 50, pictured above, who had a mastectomy and reconstruction in 2015 as well as chemo and radiotherapy.

They know all about the weight loss, anxiety, clammy skin and sleepless nights.

But by stripping off to reveal their imperfect real bodies these stars will help save the lives of millions of women.
