Whether for a day or weekend, there’s nothing like a trip to the beautiful Blue Mountains. Only a 90-minute drive from Sydney, the Blue Mountains region is a perfect escape when you need to get out of the city. Autumn is the ideal time to visit, when the last remnants of summer take the edge off the cooler climate—perfect weather for a leisurely bushwalk or stroll around town—and the landscape lights up with fiery autumnal foliage.
Scenic World, in the town of Katoomba, is a great spot to explore some of the diverse natural landscapes of the Blue Mountains. It features a 2.4-kilometre elevated boardwalk—The Scenic Walkway—that immerses visitors in the Jurassic rainforest of the Jamison Valley with minimal environmental impact. Every year, Scenic World hosts an outdoor sculpture exhibition called “Sculpture at Scenic World”. This year, 25 bold and inspiring works by local and international artists line the walkway. These works vary from large-scale installations addressing social issues such as homelessness; de-threaded cotton T-shirts that encourage thinking around the perils of fast fashion; and philosophical soundscapes with ominous messages.
Installation of the works was no easy feat, with a process that took two weeks and involved the aid of arborists and tree climbers. “Sculpture at Scenic World takes art beyond the white walls of the gallery space to create the unexpected among the natural environment,” says Justin Morrissey, Sculpture at Scenic World Exhibition Curator. “It invites visitors to explore nature and art in new ways and to celebrate the incredible talents of artists who have adapted their ideas to suit the environment.” “Sculpture at Scenic World” is accessible via the Scenic Railway, which is the world’s steepest railway. There are activities along the way for kids, as well as daily free guided walking tours and weekend workshops. It makes for a unique and memorable day out for adults and kids alike. “Sculpture at Scenic World” finishes on May 12, 2019.
