It has become rather apparent that the popularity of 4x4s has grown immensely over the years. When you find a good one, they are able to perfectly balance reliability and power, much to the satisfaction of its owners. Yet, even though there are a plethora of amazing vehicles with this build, it is clear that there have also been a lot that are just awful.
With all of that said, this article will be looking at 15 4x4s gearheads will tell you to stay away from. They will be from many different manufacturers, as well as release years. For one reason or another, none of the cars listed below are worth investing in. They all are just lacking in the quality that you would expect from them.
Now, without further delay, let's get started!
15. 2000 Kia Sportage
Kia is certainly an underrated brand, but they did not do well with the 2000 Kia Sportage. This is due to the fact that it lacks basic safety features, while possessing a rather rough ride. They did turn it around with the latest release, but this 4x4 is one you should avoid today.
14. 2005 Hummer H2
The 2005 Hummer H2 is one of the most hated 4x4s ever. This is due to the fact that it is far too heavy, while also being horrible at retaining fuel. Its steering delays also would hurt its value quickly too. Some even argue that it was the beginning of the end for the brand.
13. 2015 Jeep Cherokee
Although the Jeep Cherokee series has had a lot of success over the years, it is apparent that the 2015 model is very bad. This is why gearheads absolutely would tell you to avoid them. They are far too weak with their structures, which makes them prone to breaking down very quickly.
12. 2018 Land Rover Evoque
The 2018 Land Rover Evoque has not been well received since being released. This is due to the clear fact that it just lacks in any real sense of reliability. This is unacceptable from a luxury brand like this. People also cannot stand how cramped it is as well. Overall, it is just not a good model.
11. 2003 Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V definitely is popular today, but even with this being so, the 2003 model is one that should be avoided. This is due to the fact that it comes with a ton of serious engine trouble, as well as poor handling. It simply was not the family car it was supposed to be.
10. 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
via car and driver
Poor fuel efficiency and lack of space will be the downfall of the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser. This is a shame, as it did have a ton of potential to be special. We certainly enjoy its style, but man, it just does not follow the success this brand is known for. Thus, it should be avoided.
9. 2018 Volvo XC90
via car and driver
The 2018 Volvo XC90 is a car that really would not do well with its sales. This is a good thing for buyers though, as it became aware to them fast that it was a heavily unreliable car. Its transmission and electrical problems would start early on, which would not help the brand at all.
8. 1984 Ford Bronco II
Although the Ford Bronco series is one that people love, it is apparent that the 1984 release was disastrous. Therefore, this is not the classic 4x4 to buy from them. This car would become notorious for its abysmal steering and even worse engine. It is seen as one of the worst cars ever.
7. 2016 Jeep Renegade
via the car connection
The 2016 Jeep Renegade can be found very cheap prices, which could be alluring to buyers. However, this is not the Jeep to buy, as it is terrible with its off-road handling and performance. It really would prove to be a dark spot for this series, as they have yet to overcome it.
6. 2020 Land Rover Discovery
The 2020 Land Rover Discovery is a bad look for this manufacturer. Its rough handling and high fuel consumption makes it exactly what people do not want from a modern car. It is a shame to be honest, as this car had potential to be pretty special. However, this will not happen.
5. 2010 BMW X5
via cnc motors
The 2010 BMW X5 definitely is a vehicle that would get a lot of hate from its owners. It was justifiable though, as its weak structure made it impossible to use in rough weather conditions. This is definitely unacceptable when seeing as how it came from a top of the line brand like BMW.
4. 2001 Chevrolet Blazer
via gm authority
The 2001 Chevrolet Blazer definitely could intrigue people at this time, especially if they are on a tight budget. The series itself definitely had some great success in previous years, but this specific release became notorious for its steering delays. Definitely do not add this to your garage.
3. 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander
via motoring research
Everyone is ripping on the Mitsubishi for the Mirage, but the 2020 Outlander is barely better. It is entirely outdated and clearly has a cheap interior. This vehicle is immensely worse than cars that are ten years older than it, which is unacceptable. This is easily one of the worst cars you could buy right now.
2. 1986 Suzuki Samurai
via rally cars
The 1986 Suzuki Samurai is unique, but it is unable to drive well. This is due to the fact that it possesses a stiff ride, while also being known for steering problems. We definitely think the brand made it look pretty cool, but that does not matter when it is a pile of junk.
1. 2020 Toyota 4Runner
via car and driver
To finish this list, we will be going over the very disappointing 2020 Toyota 4Runner. You would expect so much more from this when first looking at it. However, it is very bad with its on-road handling, which is very bad for families. It simply does not measure up to the past success of this iconic series.
