Taste testing fries all day sounds fun, right? WRONG.
Guys, our mission to narrow down the top frozen french fries was an extremely difficult challenge. Partly because there are a lot of really bad frozen french fries out there. Some were limp, some chewy, and others tasted like old oil. And then, of course, our bodies also weren't (and never could be) ready for the amount of salt and starch we consumed in such a short amount of time.
Nevertheless we powered through 19 different bags. And though we felt extremely bloated and sluggish after the fact, we still feel as confident as ever in our top picks for classic, thick-cut, crinkle, sweet potato, and waffle fries.
1. Ore-Ida Extra Crispy Fast Food Fries
True to its name, these were so crispy, you could hear the crunch! The middle was light and airy and lacked any sort of creaminess, but no one was mad about it.
2. McCain Extra Crispy Crinkle Fries
With a creamy, almost mashed potato-like texture, these nicely seasoned crinkle fries won over the hearts of most taste testers. (Our test kitchen assistant chose White Castle.)
3. Alexia Seasoned Waffle Cut Fries
The crunch level was high and the seasoning on-point. They're a little greasy, but in our opinion, that's what you're signing up for when you're eating fries.
4. Ore-Ida Golden Steak Fries
The thick-cut category was one of the hardest to judge. The lack of crispiness for most brands was killing us. These were by far the best option. They're creamy in the middle, nicely seasoned, and had somewhat of a crispy crust.
5. Sweet Potato Fries
These had the truest sweet potato flavor. They're crunchy on the outside, creamy in the middle, and pretty freakin' sweet (in the best way possible).
