During his time in the missile research group, Sun was very motivated and soon became the group leader, and Qian gave him a lot of advice in the process. In the following ten years, Sun participated in the development of China's first missile test explosion, followed by the atomic bomb and the hydrogen bomb, etc. All these breakthroughs meant that China had the confidence in the world. In 1967, along with the successful test explosion of the hydrogen bomb, Sun also ushered in the beginning of his satellite career. The State decided to set up the China Academy of Space Technology, and Qian personally named him as the chief designer of the first artificial satellite.

At that time, under the siege of the United States and the Soviet Union, it was much harder for us to get a breakthrough. Importantly, at that time, the motherland was already so far behind in this area that not only the United States and the Soviet Union, but also France had launched its own satellite, and Japan was also preparing in earnest, so this Chinese satellite had to be stunning enough, and it had to be made in the shortest possible time with the best quality.

But four years later, in November 1974, China's first return remote sensing satellite exploded twenty seconds after liftoff, the challenge failed, Sun Lao in the basement felt the tremor coming from the top of his head, then ran out with his colleagues and saw the entire desert in a sea of fire, Sun Lao lost his voice and cried, even so, but as a researcher, the most important thing is to accept failure.

The following year, the return remote sensing satellite was successfully launched. A series of new products followed, from communication to remote sensing, non-recoverable to recoverable, domestic to foreign, and some statistics show that among the more than 100 space vehicles developed and launched by China, Sun was the chief designer of about forty-five, more than one-third, and he was therefore recognized as the "father of satellites" in the industry.

In 1985, China announced to the world that domestic launch vehicles would be officially put into the international market.
