HDMI first connection cable revolution, almost unified the jungle
HDMI was born in the background after 2000, when a host of TV manufacturers in the industry felt that the DVI interface was too big and unstable, so these TV giants Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Philips and others joined forces to launch the HDMI interface. These TV manufacturers almost monopolized the entire industry, even today in 2022, still rarely see a DP interface TV, 99% are HDMI. so the original intention of the HDMI interface is the TV manufacturers for a better and more stable display, not for the computer manufacturers.
That HDMI has been so good, and mature, stable and cheap, why do you want to launch the DP interface in the next four years? On the one hand, the beginning of HDMI is designed for TV, although the subsequent multiple versions of the update has been very mature, in many computers, game consoles, projectors can see the HDMI interface. But as high brush technology, color depth, etc. began to explore upward, HDMI performance is a bit overwhelmed. In particular, G-SYNC and daisy chain technology, it is only OP support.
On the other hand, HDMI is to charge, although the cost of 10,000 U.S. dollars a year for these large manufacturers is a drop in the bucket, but these large manufacturers do not want to be subject to, or face, after all, VGA and DVI are computer manufacturers to develop standards, how to HDMI here we have to be subject to. What is the difference between HDMI and DP?
1. Morphological differences.
Figure 1 is HDMI, we are most exposed to the first standard version, the shape is similar to an isosceles trapezoid, the same interface on the left and right. The latter two are much less common, is a reduced version of HDMI.
And the following figure is the DP interface, from the size and shape of the difference is not large, but the standard mouth can be seen on one side is straight edge, as for the small mouth, generally have a special logo, of course, HDMI in many devices are marked. HDMI uses the TMDS transmission method, while DP uses the micro image transmission. Taking the way the graphics card works as an example, the graphics card image is converted by the TMDS chip and then transmitted to the monitor line by line through a dedicated line. DP, on the other hand, does not need to be converted, and the image generated by the graphics card is packaged into a small packet transmission, which is then transmitted directly to the monitor. The packet approach is significantly smarter and more compatible.
For example, if there are 10 people need to go from A to B, HDMI is equivalent to a bus, the bus sits people, and then put the luggage on a van, wait until B, and then organize, each person to get their suitcases. The DP interface is much simpler, to each person with a small car, people and luggage are not separated, everyone together from A to B. 3, then the difference between the two transmission rates.

In terms of bandwidth, the latest DP2.0 has come to 80Gbps, while HDMI2.1 is only 48Gbps
In a word, although DP came out a few years later, but from the bandwidth, support for the resolution, refresh rate, obviously ahead of HDMI.
