You And Your Poop: 12 Alarming Ways Your Poop Is Warning You About Your Health

One of the things that the 21st century has taught us is that it is important to watch our health. The truth is that we do not remember to read the signs that our bodies are sending us. Did you know that your stool says a lot about your health and that it is important to analyze it on a regular basis? This is not something that most of us like to look at, but its shape and color can tell what state you are in health-wise. We have gathered some crucial details that will help you watch your steps towards achieving good health. It goes without saying though that this article should not be considered medical advice, rather an informative, fun article 🙂

Poop Color

Normally, poop is supposed to be brown. Although the color may change once in a while depending on what you consume, a drastic color change without good reason might be a warning sign that your health is not good. Below is an explanation of the different colors of stool and what they mean.

White

If your stool is white, clay-colored or grayish, it means that you lack bile. It may also be a sign that the gallbladder or the liver are not okay since these are the organs where bile production and storage occurs. It may be an indication that your bile ducts are blocked, or that you have cirrhosis or gallstones. In case your brown stool contains white mucus, this could be a sign that you are suffering from Crohn's disease.

Red

Your diet greatly influences redness in your stool. If you have eaten beets, tomatoes or any colored drinks, this could be the reason your poop is red. If food did not cause this, you have to call a doctor. Bloody poop should be a warning sign that something is not right with your health. It can be an anal fissure or more serious infections such cancer, hemorrhoids or ulcerative colitis.

Yellow

When your stool is yellow in color, your bile ducts could be blocked or the fat absorption in your body is poor. Another cause is a lack of pancreatic enzymes, which could be the result of cystic fibrosis, celiac disease or chronic pancreatitis. This should not be a cause for alarm though because it could be an indication that you consumed a lot of yellow drinks or ate many carrots .

Green

Green color in your stool can be the result of consuming vegetables containing chlorophyll such as spinach and kale, drinks with green coloring and any iron supplements. In case this is not the cause, then your stool passed through your body too fast and did not get sufficient amounts of bilirubin and bile.

Black

Black stool could be the result of intestinal bleeding or drug intake such as iron supplements and aspirin. Do not hesitate to see the doctor if you are bleeding. The blackness in stool can also be attributed to what you eat. Blue and black foods such as blueberries can give this shade.

Shape of Poop

Below are 7 types of stool and their meaning as revealed by Bristol Royal Infirmary's research.

Separate Solid Lumps

If your stool appears as separate solid lumps that resemble goat feces or nuts, this is a sign of severe constipation. Your body is lacking fiber if you have such stool. You can easily fix this issue by eating foods rich in fiber like wholewheat products, lentils, and raspberries

Large, Lumpy and Sausage-Shaped

What this stool means is that you are constipated. It means that you are not consuming fiber-rich foods. The non-dietary causes of constipation could be regular consumption of anti-diarrhea drugs and physical inactivity. To deal with this issue, make sure you are exercising regularly, and eating a lot of fruits and vegetables.

Cracked Sausage-Shape

This is a normal stool. However, always take walks and drink plenty of water.

Smooth, Soft, Sausage-Shaped

This is the perfect stool. To keep this up, keep eating balanced diets and avoid stress.

Soft Clear-Edged Lumps

This is an indication of light diarrhea. Another reason could be irritable bowel syndrome. This can be sorted by consuming foods that are low in fiber such as bananas and potatoes.

Fluffy with Edges that are Ragged

This is an indication of mild diarrhea. When this happens, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. You should also stick to eating boiled bananas and potatoes. In case this continues for more than 2 days, see a doctor.

Liquid- No Solid Pieces

What this means is that you have severe diarrhea. This can be a sign of bacterial infection, food poisoning, drug intake or lactose intolerance. You should consume water in plenty to remain hydrated. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

The above information shows that it is important to pay attention to minor changes in your body, especially through stool. It gives many signs of what your overall body health is like.
